There is no complete substitute for natural teeth. However, when you get dentures, you will want them to be as comfortable as possible. For many people, denture soft liners makes this possible.

What is a soft liner?

Soft denture liners are a soft, malleable layer of material fitting between the oral tissues and the surface of a denture. You can think of a soft liner as a type of shock absorber that cushions the impact between your gums and the hard base of your dentures. Both new dentures and relined dentures can have soft liners.

Types of Liners

There are two main types of soft liner materials: silicone and plastic. The type that would work best for you and your individual situation can be determined in consultation with your dentist.

When should you consider a soft liner?

If you have been wearing dentures for a long time, your mouth will undergo certain changes over time. For example, your jawbone will shrink, which can lead to the development of a bony area that can be a source of discomfort and sores.

Many patients who find that their dentures have become uncomfortable will benefit from soft liners, which helps tissues experience less impact and damage from biting and chewing.

Cleaning Your Liners

The most frequently used cleansers are peroxide-based. These are available in the form of tablets or powders they can be dissolved into water, turning them into hydrogen peroxide solutions.

If your soft liner is acrylic-based, you can clean it using cold water and a Q-tip for the removal of food particles. You could also use a toothbrush with extremely soft bristles.

How long do soft denture relines last?

Cared for properly, you can expect your soft liners to last at least three months. If they fit correctly, are comfortable, and you keep them free of bacteria, your soft liner can remain in your denture for longer than that.
