Dental Implants Randolph MA

Dental implants represent a remarkable advancement in dental technology that is allowing many patients to maintain the function and appearance of their teeth and smiles. Although dental implants have become the gold standard among tooth replacement options, they are not for everyone. To determine if you qualify to receive a dental implant, you will need to take part in a consultation with your dentist.

Evaluation for Dental Implants

To determine if you would make a good candidate to receive a dental implant, your dentist will conduct an evaluation of your mouth. They will determine the health of your existing teeth and ensure that nothing could interfere with a potential implant.

To qualify for a dental implant, you must have good oral hygiene and healthy gums. Any ongoing oral health problems, such as gum disease, need to be treated before the placement of dental implants.

Other things your dentist will be looking for include any problems with your jaw joint. They may also ask if you smoke tobacco products, as smoking can restrict blood flow, hindering dental implant recovery and potentially causing an implant to fail.

Dental Implant Components

Each dental implant is actually made up of three separate parts that your dentist fits together in multiple appointments:

  • Titanium metal rod
  • Abutment
  • Dental crown

Dental Implant Procedure

At your first appointment, your dentist will numb your tooth and insert a titanium metal rod into your jawbone. Over the course of the following weeks and months, your jawbone should fuse with the implanted rod to provide a solid anchor to the entire structure.

After the process of bone/implant fusing is complete, medically known as osseointegration, you will return for another appointment. Your dentist will attach a dental crown onto a connecting abutment piece. The crown serves as a functional and aesthetic replacement for a natural tooth.

Dental Implant FAQ

The following are some frequently asked questions about dental implants:

How long will my implant last?

Dental implants are designed to last for the rest of a patient’s life. This assumes that you practice proper oral hygiene so that problems like gum disease do not undermine your new implant.

How long does it take to recover from getting a dental implant?

Most dental implant patients completely heal within three months of the procedure. If this process has completed successfully, no follow-up visits are needed beyond routine checkups.

Am I too old to receive a dental implant?

Age is not a deciding factor in determining if a patient makes a good candidate to receive a dental implant. As long as you are in good oral health and have a strong jawbone, you should qualify to receive a dental implant. If you have a weak jawbone, you may require a bone graft procedure before undergoing an implant procedure.
