Partial Dentures Randolph MA

Partial dentures are one form of a dental bridge that many people get when they have only lost a few teeth due to tooth decay, accidents, or for some other reason. In contrast, complete dentures are for those who have lost all of their teeth.

There are different kinds of partial dentures, but the type that works best for you will depend upon your individual situation. When you meet with your dentist during a consultation, they will recommend the type most suitable for your needs.

What is a partial denture?

Partial dentures are removable appliances that are custom-crafted to fit over your remaining teeth. The denture’s false teeth fill in the gaps. They may be fitted for attachment to your back teeth to replace a tooth used for biting or chewing, or as a type of bridge fitting over the roof of your mouth.

Permanent partial dentures are fitted onto your existing teeth using a metal or plastic clasp fitting tightly around your remaining teeth.

Partial Denture Types and Materials

Partial dentures are available in a variety of types and materials, including:

Cast Metal

This is a type of removable partial denture consisting of replacement teeth fitted onto a cast metal frame. Metal clasps can be used to attach existing teeth to this type of partial, although precision attachments are normally used for aesthetic purposes.

Flexible Partial

Flexible partial dentures are a good choice for those who find cast metal or acrylic partials to be uncomfortable. Flexible partials are made from a thin, heat-sensitive plastic that is comfortable and very realistic in terms of appearance.

Flexible partials are attached using clasps that are colored to match the gums.

Implant-supported Fixed Bridge

If you have too many missing teeth to get a fixed bridge, or you want to avoid damaging existing teeth, an implant-supported fixed bridge may be right for you. This type of bridge is supported by dental implants that are placed within the jawbone, providing a solid anchor that makes this type of denture very sturdy. Of course, this makes it a permanently placed device. The initial cost of an implant-supported fixed bridge is high, but it can also be expected to last for a lifetime.

What To Expect

Your dentist will create a mold of your upper and lower teeth. This mold is sent to a dental lab that will fabricate your new partial dentures. Once they are ready, you will return to have them fitted.

It is normal to require several dental appointments as you are getting used to your new partial dentures. Your gums will still be healing, and it will take some time to get accustomed to your dentures.
