Amalgam is made from different metals, like silver, zinc, mercury and copper. Amalgam fillings are still used, largely because they are more affordable and longer-lasting. What concerns are there with mercury and its health effects?

In large amounts, mercury is a toxic substance to the human body. Some types of extremely sensitive instruments can detect almost minuscule amounts of mercury in the mouth’s of patients who have received amalgam fillings. However, the amount of absorbed mercury is considered too low to result in an adverse health effect.

What is the ADA’s position on silver amalgam fillings?

The American Dental Association (ADA) has found amalgam to be a “safe, affordable and durable material” used for dental fillings in over 100 million Americans. The ADA has stated that the addition of other metals in amalgam binds mercury into a safe and stable substance.

When is it appropriate to use composite fillings?

Composite fillings are made from a mixture of ceramic and acrylic that can match the appearance of your natural teeth. Composite has a very natural-looking appearance that requires less removal of tooth enamel.

When compared to amalgam, composite fillings are more expensive and do not last as long. It also takes longer to place composite fillings, leading to an additional treatment cost.

What To Expect

If you are getting an amalgam dental filling, you can expect the following:

Your dentist will begin by using a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. Once the area is completely numb, they will remove the decayed portion of your tooth. This can be accomplished using a dental drill or laser.

Your dentist will thoroughly clean all debris from the surface of the tooth and ensure that it is dry. Next, your dentist will fill the empty space using silver amalgam.
